Your screens agree. Is the data right?

When your team understands both the information and its limitations, connected data becomes a stronger basis for action.

You check your vessel’s position in three different systems. They all agree, so the information looks reliable. But if every system receives its position from the same source, you may be looking at the same error three times.

On 5 October, Lloyd’s List Intelligence launched satellite validation of suspected AIS spoofing in its Seasearcher platform. Where suitable imagery is available, it can be compared with a vessel’s reported position and timestamp, adding independent evidence to an investigation.

The principle reaches beyond vessel tracking. Whenever operational decisions depend on digital information, it matters where that information comes from, how current it is and what supports its accuracy.

More data needs more context

Your vessels already generate information about fuel consumption, engine performance, temperatures and equipment status. Bringing these measurements together can help crews and shore teams understand what is happening, but a clear dashboard still depends on the quality of its inputs.

A temperature reading may look normal because the sensor has stopped updating. A sudden change in fuel consumption may reflect a measurement problem rather than an operational change.

Before acting, the team needs to understand the source, timing and conditions behind the value.

Comparing related measurements can help reveal inconsistencies. However, several systems displaying the same sensor reading still represent one measurement, regardless of how many screens show it.

Connecting sensors to better decisions

At Sea IT, we work closely with vessels and shore organisations to make operational information more accessible and useful. Understanding how data moves between equipment, onboard systems and shore is an important part of that work.

BlueNEXUS collects and integrates sensor data from different vendors and systems into a unified structure for analysis. It can also continue collecting, storing and processing data locally during connectivity interruptions, synchronising when the connection returns.

This provides a foundation for comparing measurements and understanding vessel performance. Source accuracy, sensor maintenance and appropriate validation remain essential.

The satellite example illustrates the value of independent evidence. The same care should guide how we use sensor data in daily operations.

The solution

Trace

Understand where each critical measurement comes from and when it was last updated.

Compare

Use independent sources or related measurements to investigate unexpected readings.

Act

Define who checks questionable data before it influences an operational decision.

When your team understands both the information and its limitations, connected data becomes a stronger basis for action.
