Your certificates should follow you

You have probably seen it happen.
A seafarer joins a vessel and the documentation appears complete. Then one certificate is missing, another cannot be verified and a third is stored in a system nobody onboard can access.
PDFs made certificates easier to distribute, but did not solve the underlying challenge. Information must still be stored, verified and transferred between seafarers, crewing organisations, authorities and ship operators.
BIMCO is now preparing a pilot where independent platforms will exchange electronic seafarer certificates using a standardised IMO data model.
At Sea IT, we recognise the same principle. Digital services create value when they are secure and accessible. BlueCORE provides the stable onboard foundation needed to make that possible across the fleet.
Digital does not automatically mean portable
An electronic certificate is not necessarily portable. If it can only be accessed through one provider, the industry has replaced a paper dependency with a digital silo.
Seafarers regularly change employers, vessels and assignments. Their qualifications must follow them without repeated uploads and manual checks.
Shipowners also need trusted information to remain available during recruitment, audits and inspections.
A crewing platform may work perfectly on its own, but its value is limited if the vessel cannot access it reliably. A standardised environment such as BlueCORE provides consistent conditions for secure access and availability onboard.
Trust must travel with the information
Interoperability is about more than moving a document.
The receiving system must understand the information, verify its origin and confirm that nothing has changed.
This requires common data standards, secure digital identities, clear access rights and reliable infrastructure. Seafarers should retain control of their professional identity while authorised organisations can verify it whenever needed.
The solution
Standardise
Use shared data models so certificate information is understood consistently.
Connect
Create secure access between seafarers, shipowners, authorities, vessels and shore.
Verify
Protect the identity, origin and integrity of every certificate.
The real step forward is not turning paper into digital files.
It is creating trusted information that remains secure, accessible and portable throughout the seafarer’s career.
