A vessel may be ready to proceed, but the berth is not.

Traditionally, it would still sail towards the port, tender its Notice of Readiness and wait for its place in the physical queue.

Digital port platforms are beginning to change that process.

Some ports now allow vessels to join a berth queue before they arrive, creating an opportunity to reduce speed, save fuel and avoid unnecessary waiting at anchor.

BIMCO is developing a new Virtual Notice of Readiness and Just in Time Arrival Clause to support this shift.

Where the port facilitates it and the charterer agrees, an owner could tender a Virtual NOR before physical arrival. Provided the remaining requirements are satisfied, it would have the same contractual effect as a conventional NOR.

This means a digital timestamp could become part of the evidence determining when laytime begins and who ultimately pays for delay.

Operational data becomes commercial evidence

A position in a digital queue is no longer just operational information when it affects laytime, fuel savings and owner compensation.

The exact time a vessel entered the queue, tendered its NOR or received new arrival instructions may later need to be demonstrated during a commercial dispute.

If records differ between the vessel, charterer and port platform, a small technical uncertainty can quickly become a significant financial question.
