Maritime Pulse – Exploring AI in maritime maintenance

AI changes maintenance from reactive to predictive. It cuts downtime, extends equipment life and supports crews with smarter reliable decisions even without internet.

At Sea IT we are selective with the innovations we bring forward. For us it is never about following trends but about delivering real value that strengthens our customers’ daily operations.

One area we see great potential in is maintenance powered by AI. Today, maintenance is often reactive, parts are replaced when they fail. With AI we see the opportunity to move toward predictive maintenance, where patterns and insights guide us to act before a problem occurs.

Think of all the maintenance logs and experiences from vessels worldwide being structured and analyzed. From this collective knowledge, AI can highlight which parts are at risk of failing and when. This shift means fewer unexpected breakdowns, less downtime, and a longer lifespan for critical equipment.

It is also important not to place blind trust in every AI solution that appears on the market. Not all tools bring real value, and some can even risk lowering competence levels if they are used as a substitute rather than a support. Our belief is that AI should never replace the skills and knowledge that crews already have, but instead work as a complement that strengthens decision-making and increases reliability.

Sea IT believes that AI should not be limited to the cloud. A lighter version of the technology can be placed onboard, acting as a local proxy. That way, many functions remain available even without internet access. Once the connection returns, the system syncs and unlocks the full functionality again.

This is how we approach AI, not as an abstract concept but as a practical tool to enhance efficiency, safety and reliability across fleets.

What if your vessel could alert you to a problem before it ever happened, would you listen?

A more flexible way to stay in control

What ties all of this together is not a single feature, but a shift in how the platform is designed. Instead of a fixed dashboard, the portal is moving towards a more modular and user-driven approach
