You know the feeling when your phone navigation suddenly places you on the wrong street, sends you in the wrong direction, or briefly shows your position somewhere that does not make sense. Most of the time, it is a minor inconvenience. At sea, the same type of uncertainty deserves much more attention.
GNSS interference, including jamming and spoofing, is becoming an increasingly relevant operational concern in several maritime regions. A signal can disappear, become unreliable, or indicate a position that does not match the vessel’s actual location.
As summer traffic increases across busy routes, reliable position awareness becomes even more important. More vessels, passenger traffic, and leisure craft mean less room for assumptions.
Modern vessels use position data across several systems. Navigation, AIS, reporting, tracking, and shore-based platforms can all rely on information that appears straightforward at first glance.
The challenge is that a digital position can look convincing even when it is wrong.
It is a bit like receiving a text message from a familiar contact. The name looks right, the profile picture looks right, and the message feels believable. Still, you pause before clicking the link because something feels slightly off.
Position data deserves the same level of awareness. When several sources suddenly disagree, when a vessel appears to move in an unexpected way, or when a position looks unusual, it should not automatically be treated as a harmless glitch.
This does not mean you should distrust every digital tool onboard. It means you should understand that no single source should be treated as infallible.
Reliable operations depend on awareness, cross-checks, and the ability to notice when something no longer behaves as expected. The more connected your environment becomes, the more important it is to understand the quality of the information flowing through it.
This is also why visibility matters. When anomalies are detected early and presented clearly, crews and shore teams have a better chance of understanding what is happening before uncertainty becomes an operational issue.
Summer at sea should feel calm, but calm conditions are not a reason to stop paying attention.
Your systems may show you a position. Awareness is what tells you whether you should trust it.
