You probably recognize the feeling from home. The internet goes down for ten minutes, and suddenly the TV, speakers, alarm system, and half the devices in the house stop working properly. Nothing is necessarily broken, but everything has become dependent on the same connection.
The same pattern appears onboard when more systems become connected and more services depend on data flowing between vessel and shore. Digitalisation creates huge value, but every new connection also changes what your operation relies on.
The goal should not be to connect as many things as possible. The goal should be to build an environment where the operation remains stable even when one part of the chain stops behaving as expected.
When systems are connected without enough structure, a small issue can quickly affect more than one service. A temporary connectivity problem might interrupt reporting, delay data transfers, or limit access to tools that crews and shore teams use every day.
This does not mean you should avoid digitalisation. It means you need to understand the dependencies you create along the way.
A smart home is only smart until one failed router makes the lights stop responding. In the same way, a digitally enabled vessel needs to remain operational even when the perfect conditions disappear.
This is why reduntant environments matter more than isolated functionality. Connectivity, onboard infrastructure, monitoring, segmentation, and support need to work together as one controlled setup.
When the environment is structured properly, you can identify which services are affected, isolate issues faster, and keep critical functions running while the underlying problem is resolved.
That is the difference between adding technology and building operational resilience.
Digitalisation should make your operation stronger, not more fragile. If one failed connection can stop everything, you have not created a smarter environment. You have created a dependency.
